A building is a finely balanced thing. This is why you can’t just go and knock out walls without knowing what you are doing, since it could cause the whole building to collapse. So, what do you do when you need to remove a load bearing wall? Many times this will require the installation of adjustable steel columns.
Adjustable steel columns have a hollow core and can be extended to fit perfectly while giving needed structural stability. Because they are so vital, they do require the services of a structural engineer to make sure that they are installed correctly.
There are many things that need to be just right for the column to carry the load safely. It can’t have any rust. It is covered in rust resistant paint, but if this gets scratched, it could quickly become a problem. The column can’t have more than 1 inch tilt when measured over the length of the entire column. It also needs to have a mechanical connection on the top and bottom.
