Walking up and down stairs maybe one of the most basic things that you could do. The sad truth, though, is that thousands of people die every year from falls involving stairs. Anyone that has older parents or young children living at home should take special care to keep them safe.

There are a few things that you can keep in mind that will make it much less likely that you become part of the statistics.

Your stair should have handrails, and these should be firmly attached with no splinters or cracks in them. If there is carpet on the stairs, this should also be firmly attached, and if there are rips or looseness anywhere, you should consider replacing or removing it.

The steps should be evenly spaced and equal in size, since irregularities will make it easier to trip, especially for someone unaccustomed to the stair.

For young children’s safety, you can install gates at the top and bottom of the stairs.
