Not every home has central air-conditioning, and even if your home has it, there could be areas where you just need a little extra boost to get the room down to a comfortable temperature. To accomplish this, some homeowners have installed a window-mounted air-conditioning unit. These units are fairly inexpensive and come in a wide range of power levels, but when installing one, you should be careful to make sure it doesn’t become a safety hazard.
When you have a very large unit that is over 10,000 BTU, you are dealing with a lot of weight. You do not want this to fall down on someone walking below, so it is very important that the unit is installed properly. In some cases, it might be best to install some extra support to keep it from falling out.
You also need to be careful with the electrical connection. An air conditioner should be connected directly to the wall receptacle if at all possible. Otherwise, you will need to purchase an extension cord that is specifically made for air conditioners. Just using a regular extension cord or a power strip could become a fire hazard.
